This time at Ghost Story, we spotlight community artist Bona Kim from Vancouver, Canada. Bona Kim is a gifted Contemporary Painter, Illustrator, Graphic Designer, and BioShock fan. Her body of work is composed of alluring illustrations that showcase a wide variety of emotions through people, inanimate objects, and symbols. Current pieces focus on creating intimate connections and emotions through capturing the complex beauty of children’s dolls. Bona Kim’s Elizabeth is particularly astounding and caught our attention. To learn more about Bona Kim and her work, read below for a short interview we had with the artist.

Tell us a little about yourself
I’m a South Korean now living in Vancouver, Canada. I’m an illustrator, graphic designer, and an art instructor. I have a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Seoul Women’s University in South Korea.
Aside from my rare ventures in fan art, I’m interested in surrealist art, using a variety of mediums.

What do you love about the game?
The mystery behind Elizabeth and the world around her. Watching Elizabeth grow and experience Columbia after years of captivity.
Do you have a favorite memory or turning part in the story? (May contain spoilers, highlight to view)
When Elizabeth kills Daisy Fitzroy to save Fink’s son. It’s the point where Elizabeth really loses her innocence and her character goes in a big change of direction.
What was your inspiration for drawing Elizabeth? Were there any themes you were trying to pursue? (May contain spoilers, highlight to view)
A big part of the game is Elizabeth growing and learning about herself. Gradually, she’s losing her innocence, especially after killing Daisy Fitzroy. My drawing tries to present Elizabeth like a porcelain doll, but the expression is melancholy and weighed down with the sadness of her experiences.
What connects you to Elizabeth? What do you like most about her?
After leaving the tower, she’s a fish out water exploring Columbia. She loves the experience, but the new world is also scary. As the story goes on, she becomes stronger and more sure of herself. It feels similar to my experiences emigrating from Korea to Canada, which can be exciting and daunting all at once.
You also have illustrated a little sister, are there any other characters you would like to or plan to use next?
I haven’t planned on it – the little sister was actually a drawing of a cosplayer at a convention we went to. I needed to fill in some time sitting at our table. I’m open to trying something later on.
